The only thing we can worry about is the PvP state . Servors wont be shut down for sure, but PvP will be about who got the most accounts to sync them..

It's funny the way that some people almost think that GW1 is one big dedicated server that can only play the one game. Sort of like the foolishness in Star Trek Voyager where the Doctor had to transfer himself from point to point rather just spawning another copy.
Basically, after GW2 goes live, GW1 could be thought of as a background task running on the servers. It's all just software - all those outposts and districts in GW1 don't actually exist anywhere, they're just software modules that are spawned as needed. Sort of like when we run a browser, music player, etc, in the background while playing.
GW 1 & 2 can very easily co-exist on the same server farm.

Of course,
The ultimate question is how long will GW's justify the dedication of resources in terms of Servers, and Virtual servers after GW2 is released; I think we can all help ourselves a little by continuing to purchase, Costumes, Mercs, and other little items now and again; and keeping the Revenue stream going. Honestly if at some point A-Net looks into a subscription; I'ld be down for a reasonable maintenance fee.

Technically I hope GW is kept on a seperate server(s) and not a Virtual Machine, if only because having seen GW2 thats going to be very Graphic/Resource intensive, and yes the Graphics will be painted on the Clients, but with the Servers coordinating all the instances in an open world; I expect thats going to gobble up alot of the available computing resources of any machine GW would be coexisting on; Anyhow the programing challange is considerable; hopefully they make their lives simpler and our lives better; by Maintain GW1 its own machine(s), as long a possible.

BB.

I will keep playing GW1 just because I like it and have no rush / pressure to test and buy GW2.

First of all, a server farm is just a big collection of hundreds of computers. When we talk about GW1 servers, we are not talking just one computer - we're talking a whole bunch of individual computers who's particular task can be nearly anything. Some computers (in the farm) can be just handling logins, others can be doing the 'friends' network, some can be running instances, some running PvP, some running ANet's website, or ANet's private Ventrilo, etc. There would be no need to run GW1 as Virtual machine, especially considering that the game would actually run over many computers.
When I said that GW1 would run as a background task, I didn't mean that it would run in the background on particular computers, I meant that it would run on the same "farm", sharing resources such as I/O, logins, friends network etc, and taking up a relatively small percentage of the total "farm".

Thats kind of cool, the Server farms I'm used to from SATCOM are generally only a handful of servers; (per Customer) or at most one Standard Equipment Rack; I've only seen one farm that big; and thats all TV content. Thanks though, interesting stuff. BB.

Oh well dont want to get too far OT.
